Episode 2: Seattle Waterfront Swings

Location :   Seattle Waterfront by Ferry Terminal Directions : From Pioneer Square , w alk 0.4 miles down to the Seattle Ferry Terminal. The swings are just to the right of the terminal (when facing Elliot Bay). Or walk 0.6 miles down from Pike Street Market and enjoy the new waterfront park. Chair Type : 8 "chair like" metal swings with armrests The new Seattle Waterfront Park officially opened on September 6, 2025 after 20+ years of planning and construction. It replaced the old Alaskan Way Viaduct and exposed beautiful views of Elliott Bay, created green spaces, and connected Pike Place Market to the shoreline and ferries. The swings are one of the gems of this new park and is a hit with both adults and children alike. Episode 1: Tunnel Tops

  Location: Presidio Tunnel Tops Directions: Pay for parking at the Presidio Visitor Center  (or take the 43 MUNI or free Presidio Go Shuttle ), then walk 3 minutes to the free chairs. Chair Type: Adirondack (5 chairs with one currently broken as of Sept 2026) The Presidio Tunnel Tops location opened in 2022. After the decrepit Doyle Drive highway was damaged by the Loma Prieta Earthquake. the decision was not to repair or rebuild it. Architect Michael Painter proposed lowering the elevated highway below ground and turning them into tunnels, then building parkland over the top by filling it with 90,000 cubic yards of dirt. The end result is the Tunnel Tops park with the views you see above. The marshland in foreground by the Bay was also restored by removing seven acres of asphalt. After enjoying the chairs at Tunnel Tops, you can walk down the path to explore the birds in the marshlands, along with the dog walkers.

Free Chairs with Views: Introduction

Welcome to my Chairs with Views blog. In this series, I will publish regular episodes where I will feature, well, chairs with views. Not just any chair with a view, but in particular, free chairs with free views. In particular, comfy chairs with good views, or less than comfy chairs with great views. Rather than the same old views, I will try to feature unusual chairs, or locations that are new or a little hidden (though none that require hiking for hours).   This blog supplements my social media accounts by going into some of the more logistical details like the following: Exact Location Directions and available parking Type of Chairs My goal is to have 100 episodes, or 2 episodes a week for the first year.
